Dang's journey began in 2011 when Vincent Kitirattragarn, a New York City native, decided to bring more authentic Thai flavors to the United States. Growing up, Vincent spent his summers immersed in the diverse culinary offerings of Thailand, where he was exposed to a wide array of traditional Thai dishes. As he entered adulthood, he noticed that the Thai food options readily available in the US were limited to a few basic staples, such as Pad Thai, mango sticky rice, and Thai iced tea.
Inspired by his Thai-American heritage, Vincent set out to change this. He started a pop-up restaurant in NYC, where he introduced his mother's ("Mama Dang") recipe for Thai lettuce wraps that called for toasted coconut. However, Vincent couldn't find a store-bought version that truly captured the flavor and texture he was looking for, so he decided to make his own.
Starting from scratch, Vincent shaved thick strips of fresh coconut meat and lightly toasted them. The captivating aroma caught the attention of his roommates, who couldn't resist sampling the crunchy, naturally sweet coconut chips. Recognizing the potential of this delightful snack, Vincent knew he had to start a company.
Thus, Dang was born, named after his beloved mother. Vincent's brother, Andrew, later joined the venture, and together they have continued to draw inspiration from their Thai-American roots to create a diverse range of better-for-you, Asian-American snacks.
